When applying to name a horse is recommended you:

• First read the Registrar of Racehorses Naming Policy; and
• Second check the availability of your first, second and third choices of name by using this Horse Name Availability Search.

This Horse Name Search should be used as a guide only. Even if a name shows as available, this is not a guarantee the name will be approved when submitted.

The Registrar under the Australian Rules of Racing (AR18):

• May refuse to register any name which for any reason he/she may deem undesirable; and
• May cancel any horse's registered name for whatever reason he/she deem necessary.

Where the "Available" column advises the year that name will become available again - the name will be available from the 1st of August in the year shown, this is not a guarantee the name will be approved when submitted.

In a significant milestone for the Thoroughbred Racing Industry, Racing Australia has been developing a unified Single National System following the ratification and agreement by all of Racing Australia shareholders the Principal Racing Authorities (PRA's).

From January 2018 the Registrar of Racehorses inclusive of Naming, Transfers and Leases has been moved to the Single National System. This Horse Name Availability Search is now powered by the Single National System and as a result this page has changed slightly.
