Unnamed Horses (not registered to race)
Traceability rules FAQs
I am the owner of an unnamed horse

Q: When do I have to lodge a Foal Ownership Declaration? What happens if it is late?

A: Within 30 days of the foal's birth, lodge a Foal Ownership Declaration online at www.studbook.org.au.

If your Foal Ownership Declaration is lodged late, your horse's registration for racing may not be permitted in the future. If you wish to race the horse or sell it for racing purposes, you will have to make a submission to Racing Australia as to why registration should be allowed.

Q: A Foal Ownership Declaration was lodged in the breeder's name but a group of us own the horse and will race it together. What do we have to do?

A: Immediately lodge an Unnamed Horse Transfer of Ownership online at myhorseracing.horse or via a paper form here.

Q: We just purchased an unnamed horse at the sales. What do we have to do?

A: Within 7 days of the sale, email the Unnamed Horse Transfer of Ownership form issued to you by the sales agent to registration@racingaustralia.horse.

Q: When do I need to notify Racing Australia of the change in ownership?

A: Any change of ownership for horses must be advised within 7 days of the sale date.

Q: Can the ownership transfer wait until I've paid the auction house for the horse?

A: No, a transfer must be lodged within 7 days of the sale date.

Paying the auction house does not prove title of ownership and any commercial agreement you have with the sale agent is of no concern to Racing Australia (in the same way banks/finance companies have title over a house or car that is registered in your name).

Q: How do I complete the ownership transfer if the horse is not fully syndicated within the 7 day period?

A: We understand you may not sell the full 100% share of the horse immediately; however we do require the incoming owner who is going to take responsibility for the health, welfare and location of the horse to submit a transfer form. The transfer fee is $55 per horse.

As soon as the horse is fully syndicated, each owner must submit an Unnamed Horse Transfer online at myhorseracing.horse or here declaring their share percentage.

Q: Do I need to complete an Unnamed Horse Transfer of Ownership form if the horse has been purchased to sell/pinhook at another auction?

A: Yes, every time the horse changes hands you must notify Racing Australia on the prescribed form within 7 days of the sale date.

Q: Do I need to complete the Unnamed Ownership Transfer form if I am planning to register the horse with a name within 7 days of purchase?

A: An Unnamed Ownership Transfer form is still required, however to assist purchasers only the owner page from the registration is required rather than having to complete the form twice.

Please submit page 3 of 4 of the transfer form together with the Horse Registration application here or online at myhorseracing.horse

Q: We just purchased an unnamed horse privately. What do we have to do?

A: Within 7 days of the sale, lodge an Unnamed Horse Transfer of Ownership online at myhorseracing.horse or via a paper form
here.

Q: Can we just complete the paperwork when we register our horse for racing?

A: No. If you don't notify Racing Australia on time, your horse may be delayed from trialing or racing once it is registered to race.

Q: How do we register our horse for racing?

A: Lodge a Horse Registration application online at myhorseracing.horse or via a paper form here.
You must do this at least 5 business days before your horse is entered in a race or trial.

Q: Our horse isn't in a trainer's stable and it changes location. What do we have to do?

A: Within 3 days of your horse moving, the managing owner must lodge a Horse Change Of Location online at myhorseracing.horse or via a paper form here.

Q: What if our horse only moves temporarily?

A: You don't need to notify Racing Australia if your horse is away from its usual location for up to 30 days (if receiving vet treatment) or up to 7 days (if attending an auction).

Q: Our horse is in a trainer's stable and it changes location. What do we have to do?

A: Nothing. The trainer is responsible for notifying Racing Australia.

Q: We have decided not to register our horse for racing. What do we have to do?

A: Within 7 days of making that decision, the managing owner must lodge a Retirement/Death of Horse Notification online at myhorseracing.horse or via a paper form.

For horses domiciled in NSW click here.
For horses located outside of NSW click here.

If your horse is in a trainer's stable, you can authorise the trainer to notify Racing Australia for you.

Q: Our horse has died. What do we have to do?

A: Within 48 hours of death, the managing owner must lodge a Retirement/Death of Horse Notification online at myhorseracing.horse or via a paper form.

For horses domicled in NSW/ACT click here.
For all other states click here.

If your horse is in a trainer's stable, you can authorise the trainer to notify Racing Australia
for you.

Q: What is a horse status update?

A: If your horse hasn't had any activity (e.g. change of location) recorded with Racing Australia/ Principal Racing Authority in 6 consecutive months, your horse's status/location must be updated.

Q: How do we complete a horse status update?

A: Within 7 days of the 6-month mark, the managing owner must lodge a Horse Status Update online at myhorseracing.horse or via a paper form here and make any outstanding notifications/lodgments.

Q: How will we know if we need to provide a status update for our horse?

A: Racing Australia will send reminders to the managing owner at the following times:

  • email 7 days before 6-month mark;
  • email on day of 6-month mark;
  • text message 4 days after 6-month mark.

Q: What happens if we don't provide a status update on time?

A: You may be restricted from transacting with Racing Australia/Principal Racing Authority in relation to any horse you own or breed with (e.g. unable to submit nominations, receive prizemoney).
